Roof extension - Intertwined duplex apartments
This project consists of the rehabilitation of a social housing building in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. The existing floors are converted into student housing. Only the structure is preserved, while the two facades and partitions are removed. The building is extended on both facade in order to increase the living area and allows for the inclusion of loggias. The lower floors of the building are divided by a ventilation room for the metro, creating a differentiated access to the collective housing units. These units are developed across the four additional floors accessible through external walkways. The first three floors comprise combinations of cross-through imbricated duplex apartments. The top floor consists solely of cross-through simplex apartments. To avoid overloading the existing concrete structure, the additional floors rely on metal frameworks with supports distributed on either side of the existing building. They are braced with trusses integrated into the partitions of the intermediate floor of the duplex units.
